Dance music tastemaker Diplo doesn’t give out his seal of approval to just anyone. So when the trailblazing DJ dropped the GRMM track What You Need in his revered BBC Radio 1 program to an audience of millions, the music world took note. It’s no surprise GRMM has been turning all the right heads. At only 24, GRMM – the solo project of Sydney’s Benn Markos – has emerged as one of the Australian beatmakers leading dance music’s new guard. And in the six months since that Diplo seal of approval, GRMM’s over-delivered on his next-big-thing tag. After What You Need broke him to the world, GRMM connected online with New York vocalist Father Dude to create the chill-trap powerhouse Electrify. Already, Electrify’s landed on high rotation on Australia’s most respected radio station triple j, hit the #2 spot on the iTunes electronic chart and amassed half a million streams on SoundCloud, with the play count climbing by the day. The song was such a success that GRMM and Father Dude have gone back into the studio for a second collaboration, due to arrive soon. With Electrify everywhere, Australia’s biggest media outlets are also championing GRMM. Earlier this year, leading dance music website inthemix named him one of their ‘Rising Stars Who Deserve the Hype’, with Stoney Roads nominating GRMM for the mantle of Breakthrough Producer of the Year in the Stoney Roads Awards. But Electrify isn’t the only GRMM track making waves. This year alone, GRMM’s polished off edits for The Preatures, Yolanda Be Cool and British act Gorgon City, who tapped him for official remix duties on their hit single Here For You. The Gorgon City remix went far and wide, seeing GRMM take centre stage on the triple j airwaves once more, while also climbing high on the Hype Machine charts. All this along with online tastemaker dance portal edm.com who have been championing GRMM’s music by selecting his tracks no less than 3 times as ‘feature track of the week’. Despite those credits, the biggest GRMM remix yet has been his take on Maxx Baer’s Caprisun, which showcased his ability to create music that’s as lush and shimmering as it is soulful. With the Caprisun remix boasting over 600,000 SoundCloud plays and counting, it’s clear GRMM’s hitting all the right notes.
